Black grape varieties

The following table gives my experience of disease resistance. Note that the very popular Pinot Noir is very susceptible to disease. If you grow this variety you must spray or you will get no crop.

Regent and Rondo are comparatively new red hybrids. Results are awaited from the current plantings but there is some optimism that these will prove to be winners!

On the whole, red wine varieties need more sun than white; with insufficient sun the wine seems to lack body.

Summary Table

Variety Powdery Mildew Timing
Pinot noir Susceptible Mid-season
Regent Fairly good Mid-season
Rondo Susceptible Early
Triomphe Fairly good Early
