White grape varieties

Seyval Blanc Here is an illustration of a row of mature Seyval Blanc vines being cropped at about 1 bottle per foot.

The following table gives my experience of disease resistance. I initially chose Seyval Blanc because of its proven performance in the UK; it remains one of the best grapes for a new grower in the UK and possibly the very best. I have a new plantings of Solaris and will report my findings in due course.

Summary

Variety Powdery Mildew Timing
Madeleine Angevine Susceptible Early
Bacchus Susceptible Mid-season
Orion Good Mid-season
Phoenix Fairly good Mid-season
Seyval Blanc Good Late
Solaris * Early

* New trial - insufficient experience but described as ‘a modern disease resistant variety’.
