White grape varieties
![]() |
Here is an illustration of a row of mature Seyval Blanc vines being cropped at about 1 bottle per foot. |
The following table gives my experience of disease resistance. I initially chose Seyval Blanc because of its proven performance in the UK; it remains one of the best grapes for a new grower in the UK and possibly the very best. I have a new plantings of Solaris and will report my findings in due course.
Summary
| Variety | Powdery Mildew | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Madeleine Angevine | Susceptible | Early |
| Bacchus | Susceptible | Mid-season |
| Orion | Good | Mid-season |
| Phoenix | Fairly good | Mid-season |
| Seyval Blanc | Good | Late |
| Solaris | * | Early |
* New trial - insufficient experience but described as ‘a modern disease resistant variety’.
